He Remembered Us
It’s been 2 days, 4 visits and about 10,000 kisses on those big chubby cheeks!
We are all blissfully back in the saddle again. Our little dumplin is doing great. He definitely remembered us, and we are all happy to be reunited!
All is well, and we are able to access dial-up internet in our apartment! We are operating at a blazing speed of 52 kbps. Wheeee! It took us a couple of days to purchase an iCard – sorry for the delay. (Thanks a million, Karla, for the use of your computer. It has worked like a charm.)
We arrived Tuesday morning, in just enough time to drop our things off at our apartment and have our visit with Milo. As we drove around the baby house to the main entrance we passed a group of children playing outside. It looked like Milo’s age group, but they went out-of-view too quickly to spot him. It actually was his group, and his caregiver saw us drive by and zoomed him upstairs for a face wash and change of clothes. When she carried him into the playroom we could tell he had been crying (probably because he didn’t want to come inside.) He looked back and forth at each of us while we both greeted him with an enthusiastic “Sah-lem!” He had this sweet half-smile and a funny, suspended expression on his face. I can only describe it as the kind of look a person gets when he doesn’t quite get the joke you just told, and he is waiting for it to click. Very amusing.
He came to us without a fuss and we sat down on the couch and held him close while he sucked his thumb and leaned into us. He was a little nervous and shy for a few minutes, but nothing like when we first met him. It wasn’t long before he started playing and interacting with us. He wasn’t completely himself, but I’d say about 50% on the first visit and now up to 90% on our fourth visit. He remembered all of our silly exchanges. For instance, whenever he coughed before, I would imitate him by making a very fake coughing sound with my tongue hanging out. He didn’t miss a beat – when he got choked drinking his apple juice, he actually looked at me and waited for me to do my fake cough. As soon as I did then he faked a cough too. Just like old times!
He is as handsome and charismatic as ever. He looks slightly taller and thinner. He seems to have lost a little of his strength, stamina and agility with walking and going up stairs, etc., but he will regain it very quickly. They trimmed his hair, so it’s not as “mullety” as before, but I kind of missed it at first!
A caregiver told us that he had a difficult time when we left. Very difficult. For about two weeks he would often cry at the door and be terribly upset, which he had never done before. Oh, how it breaks my heart to know that. She said that she would show him our pictures and he would smile. She also said that he carried around the little stuffed cheetah we left for him. Awww… Ok, no more sad stuff.
I’m excited to say that we have a different apartment this time -- and we love it! It’s large, very clean, well appointed, and there have been no mysterious smells! Photos are coming soon. It’s in a better neighborhood than our old place, across from the soccer stadium on the main street. It’s in the same building as Aina, our translator, so she is close if we need anything. We have a security gate around the building, and there is always someone in a security office inside the front door. I believe the residents take shifts there. Also, there is a convenience store right downstairs and several nearby restaurants and shops. The only drawback to being here is that it doesn’t have an air conditioner, but we really don’t mind! They gave us a fan, and the windows all open wide and have screens to keep the infamous mosquitoes out. When we feel overheated we simply take a cool shower. I actually like being in a more natural environment because it feels more visceral and in tune with nature. The days have been hot, but the evenings are pleasant, so with the fan in front of the window pulling in the night air we sleep like babies. Or rather, we sleep like 2 people who traveled for 3 days to get halfway around the world!
The rest of our trip was fine once we got out of Memphis. Nobody accused Frank of smoking in the restroom this time. :-) The only exception is that our luggage didn’t make it from Amsterdam to Almaty. It arrived in Almaty yesterday, and it should arrive in Aqtobe today. I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 5 days, so for a change when we are around the apartment I have taken to wearing a pretty, thin, flowered bath towel pinned into a lovely little strapless dress. Tres chic!
Amsterdam was chilly and rainy, so we grabbed a few hours again at the Mercure Hotel in the airport. I wanted to go into town anyway, but Frank was too tired and the chilly/rainy factor made me less inclined to drag him out. FOR FUTURE TRAVELERS this airport has a convenient “baby care” area. It is a beautiful, modernly designed, dimly lit room with about 6 cribs and a large counter with a sink. The cribs are circular, and flanked by semi-circular benches. Each crib area has a sheer curtain encircling it to enclose the space. There is also a small light in each area. It’s very well done, and there were only 2 cribs occupied when I peeked in. Nearby is a toddler playroom, with playground-style equipment for little tykes to wear themselves out. There is also an area next to the Meditation Center with a whole fleet of black leather lounges sitting in front of a plasma TV that plays soothing nature scenes with no sound. Many weary travelers catch some Z’s here. Also, if you are flying on KLM anytime soon, you shouldn’t miss one of their film choices – a documentary called Young at Heart. We both loved it and will be adding it to our documentary collection.
The French couple is still here -- Brigitte and Robert. They have stayed here the whole time! I don’t know how they’ve done it. They were here for 2 weeks before we arrived for our first trip, and they will still be here another week. They were able to take Tim from the baby house for good on Tuesday. We drove up for our afternoon visit just as they did, and we were all so excited to see each other. I’m so glad we got to be there to see their sweet moment of exodus. I snapped this picture just as they were leaving the playroom forever. They are really lovely people, and they will be in town for a few more days while more paperwork is being processed so we will try to get together. We exchanged e-mail addresses, so we can always stay in touch. Our kids are Kaz cousins, after all!
Our court hearing is still set for Monday the 14th. Gulnara couldn’t find the birthmother to write the final release, but she did find the grandmother. They will ask her to do it if they don’t find the birthmother soon. That part makes me a little nervous, but nobody has visited Milo the whole time he has been in the orphanage (since birth) so we have faith that it will all work out. It just has to. Please keep us in our thoughts.
Well, I'm off to enjoy some of that excellent Kazakh yogurt for breakfast. Maybe some fresh cherry juice too. The sun is just coming up and turning the sky to a pretty periwinkle. I like the way this apartment feels in the morning.
Love and hugs,
Frank, Regina and Milo

He is such a cutie! I have been checking . . . and checking . . . and checking some more! So glad that you are there and he remembered you! It must feel so great to be back together again. I hope everything goes without one little hitch.
Sending lots of good thoughts/energy your way.
We're so glad you've had your reunion with Milo! It's so special that he remembered your interactions--very cute about the coughing! We hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly and you enjoy every moment.

Wonderful to hear all the news! Especially about your reunion with the adorable Milo, who remembered you! Of course he did! He's as cute as ever. What size clothes is he wearing now?
The sign-off from the birth family would make me nervous too, so I'll keep my fingers crossed and send up the prayers for you that it comes through and court is a breeze!
Okay, now I'm jealous about the great apartment. Hmmm. Guess I get The Bucket? ;) Still no news on my LOI, but it better hurry or I'll miss you in Aqtobe!
BTW, I love the little pinky in the air while he is holding his bread! Too cute!
Reunited...and it feels sooo good! He looks so happy to see you and I knew he would remember you both. How could he not?! He is so adorable and I know you guys are so glad to have him back in your arms. Glad the apartment is better this time and your stay will be more comfortable. We're thinking positive thoughts that all will go smoothly with the court date and paper signing. Love to all~
p.s take a picture of the dusty-black-suited-lawn cutter man for me. I am intrigued...
Wow - you sound very chipper and in a great mood! Riding on cloud 9 since you've arrived - and no wonder Milo recognized you! It sounds like all is working out very well this trip so far. I'm happy that I'll be able to access your blog now and get the 'play-by-play'! I love the photos of Milo- he is just adorable.
I loved the title! I'm so happy that you have Milo back in your arms. :-)
So wonderful to know everything is back in sync. How cute is your little boy!!
Keeping our fingers crossed that all the sign off's go off with a glitch!
Enjoy your days together !
Darlene
Great update! You sound refreshed and ready to go. I'm so happy that Milo remembers you and getting back up to speed.
I will think good thoughts that the mother or grandmother sign off with no hitches.
Where does the French family live in France? E-mail me personally. My husband's family lives in France and it would be interesting to know.
Enjoy your stay with Milo. Sounds like you're enjoying your new apartment too! Yeah :)
Take care,
Eileen
I'm sniffling with happiness and hoping Grandmother knows you're the best thing for Milo.
I'm so glad you're "home"!
I am so happy to read the update. I have been blog stalking you daily :)
Over the moon that he remembered you guys and that you are settling in on this visit. Sounds like your much more comfortable and "at home". Continue enjoying your time with your ray of sunshine. Sending happy and positive thoughts for court

Regina and Frank,
Thanks so much for the wonderful update. Your narrative is terrific, and Milo is adorable.
It seems so long since anyone has posted exciting news coming out of Kaz - I'm glad it could be you.
I know that there are a lot of families out there following along that have been in this process for many months now, and so to see, hear, and read about such a fantastic boy becoming a part of such a loving family fuels the hope and optimism tanks that are so critical to finding your way to the other side of the IA mountain.
Your summit is in sight now - revel in the actions and emotions of this life affirming journey.
I assure you that it is certainly not all downhill from here. For though there are certainly other mountains out there, each one beyond this point will be approached as a family.
We wish you all the best over the coming weeks. Take Care.
Steve, KJ, and Tougy
Great Reunion. Still as cute as ever! Hope all goes smoothly in the upcoming weeks! karen
So happy that you made it back to Milo safely! I'm sure the Memphis delay was unexpected, but sounded like you made the most of it. I know what you mean about make shift clothing when your luggage goes MIA. Enjoy the toga party. Ah, cherry juice, yum! Haven't been able to find that at home. Milo is still a cutie. Good luck at court! ~ Angela C.
JOY JOY JOY!!!!! Thank goodness MIlo remembered you and you are all reunited again! JOY!!! Seriously, I have been obsessively checking your blog! SO HAPPY you are ALL safe and sound and the new apartment is so nice - and your luggage will arrive - everything sounds so HAPPY! A bit nerve-wracking about the birth-people - but we will pray that all goes well and smoothly. This is BEAUTIFUL!!! JOYYYYYYYY!!!!! With love!
Regina, I am so glad you made it safely and that Milo recognized you. Enjoy your time and I will be praying for your court date. It will all work out.
I am so happy that you three have been happily reunited. It breaks my heart as well to imagine Milo crying at the door after you left, but hopefully the fact that you returned this time will make it easier on him should thinks play out into a three trip journey. I am absolutely thrilled that he remembered you. I know you were cautiously optimistic that he would, and I am sure that his happiness to see you thrilled you beyond any words.
I can tell from your post that the old Regina and Frank are back- with refreshed, positive energy, not the overwhelmed R&F from trip one. I am so happy for you for that, and hope you will be able to take in more of Aktobe on this trip as well.
We will continue sending all good wishes and thoughts your way for a smooth process, a successful court date, and a family of three home together very soon.
One last thing- love the pic of Milo eating his noodle soup. He looks so sophisticated!
Take care of yourselves!
The first thing I said when I saw Frank and Milo's picture was "they cut his hair"!
Oh Regina he looks good! And yes we can tell he has changed a little. Maybe it's the hair cut.
We are thinking great big powerful good thoughts for you guys that all goes smooth on the 14th.
Hey if you don't mind and if they don't care. Could you share the French couples e-mail with us. And give ours to them. Bob lived in France for 2 years. He was the on site engineer for the bakery equipment and inside stuff that was installed in the bakery that makes the McDonald's hamburger buns for France. It's located in Fleury Merogis, about 30 miles from Paris. Bob loves France, speaks fluent (however rusty) French and would love to converse with someone with such common interests (ie a KAZKID)!!

Congrats on a good apartment, and the reunion, etc. etc. etc. I could go on and on! I'm so happy for you right now. I will look forward to pictures of the non-smelling apartment soon! Keep 'em coming! I'm glad to hear cheer in your "voice"...love you guys! Hugs and kisses, Frank and Regina. Squeeze Milo from Aunt Karla and the West Ashley Crazies! We're thinking about you!!!!

Yeah, new photos! ANd updates! I'm so happy it's going well, and will keep my fingers crossed there are no issues with the "mother's" release. Hopefull the grandmothers will do. I can't wait to see you take him out of there for good.
Shannon
I am so happy to read an update and that you're back with your beautiful boy. You will be home with him before you know it. I know it seems far away but time passes quickly. I can't wait to read more about your time with him.
Ahoy, world travelers. I was sort of holding my breath, waiting to peek at the blog until I was sure something would be there that was more than just "we are stuck in Menphis" or some other airport. I was greatly rewarded tonight with three fabulous reports of the trip, the apartment, and of the reunion. I'm so glad Milo remembered you, and although it's gratifying to know he missed you, I know that part was somewhat painful to hear about too. But the fact that he pined for you says a lot about the bond he formed with you that will only get stronger over time. Besides, sometimes it's the bad that makes the good feel so fabulous. Milo is a lucky little fellow--I always knew you would be the absolute best parents! Kiss the little fellow for his "ex-in-law-Gramma-by-marriage-now-dissolved" (or whatever I am). Yikes--just give the little darling a kiss. Karla's mom, Happy
Sending great wishes from Austin, Texas to you and your family! Susan and Griffin (Petro, May 2008)
I'm so glad you made it (albeit sans luggage) and most importantly, that Milo remembers his mommy and daddy. Good luck with your court date and enjoying your time with your boy. We are still waiting for a travel date.
Cindy, Matt and Astrid and coming soon...Akeyla!
Oh my gosh, he is so darn CUTE!! That mouth is absolute perfection. I'm so happy you guys! I will pray that the bio signatures go off without a hitch.
Glad to hear you're living in high style now. :-)
So far everything sounds so much better this time around. I hope so!
